World Cockatiel

World Cockatiel
Why does my cockatiel hate me?

I got a baby cockatiel 2 christmases ago. for the first year he/she was my bestest friend in the whole wide world. we kept him in a medium sized cage at the time. About 1.5 years later we moved him/her into a much bigger cage. while moving the bird it bit me. i had to get stitches. i have not played with the bird since. so it is almost a yr without playing with him. I am a singer,so i sing to him ALL the time. he can imitate some of the whistles i whistle at him. This saturday i am taking him to the et for the first time ever. my friend is going to help me get him into his old medium sized cage, bcuz his large one will not fit into the car. i am afraid that the vet is going to yell at me for not interacting with him that much for that long, and i am afraid he is going to bite her too. please tell me why he might hate me, besides the fact that i havent played with him. and please tell me if you think the vet will be upset with me.

You’re bird doesn’t hate you. Birds bite, that’s just how it is. When you got bit like that, you no doubt became scared of him. You can’t let a bird intimidate you. Its going to happen every now and then–but not to that degree. To be honest, you made a mistake by not playing with him anymore. I’ll explain why…
Your bird is no longer used to being played with. Its going to take so much more time to get him used to being handled if that is what you want. You should try to move your bird yourself instead of letting your friend do it. If she has never spent any quality time with him, then she is the one who is most likely to get bit.

Your bird may not have liked you messing with his cage. They can be territorial, which is probably why he bit you, that or maybe you moved too fast and scared him. It’s not because he hates you. Birds don’t really have the capacity to hate like people do. Even if he was momentarily angry or scared, it is not something he can remember now.

The vet might get bit, but you can’t really worry about that. Its all in a day’s work for a vet. And he may say something to you about how much you play with it, but as long as you are taking care of your pet and its in good health, chances are your vet won’t say anything.
