Wood Keet

Wood Keet
Q about parakeets – exercise and nail/claw trimming?

Are there ways to trim my keet’s nails/claws other than taking her to a vet or get it done professionally (I wouldn’t think about doing it myself.)? My keet’s usual perch is one of those kinds with little gravel bits that are apparently supposed to help with either beak or claws(or are they called nails?), do those work?

And about exercise – I don’t keep my parakeet’s wings clipped, but when I let her out of her cage she’s usually more of a climber than a flyer and seems to always be biting the bars of the cage whether she’s in the inside or the outside, why is this? So as for exercise I was thinking of getting a playgym to put on top of the cage, but the ones at the pet store can be anywhere from $50 to $100 and I looked up some DIY’s but I don’t see myself drilling holes in wood anytime soon.
Any ideas?
THanks.

None of my 400 budgies ever get their nails clipped nor need to. Provide safe branches of varying thicknesses for feet and claws exercise and do not use sandpaper or grit type perches. Those perches can cause feet sores called bumblefoot. Throw it away. You are better off using safe branches.

As far as a playgym goes……….find a safe branch……..around 4 ft tall with lots of twigs and branches running off it. Put it in a large tin and set it in their with either cement or plaster. You now have a vertical climbing tree you can pick up and move room to room where ever your budgie is. Hang toys off it and coloured plastic bangles, plastic chain and pegs with food treats such as spinach or silver beet. Easy to do, very little cost and looks great.
