What type of stone or mineral is red with black veins, flat and smooth?
We went sluicing for gemstones for the first time today, and got home to find several stones of a type I’ve never seen before. I can’t find photos of anything like them online, and wonder what they could be. They are all relatively long and flat, a deep red similar to dark brick, and smooth-ish. The type of stone they most resemble to me in terms of everything but color would probably be turquoise. These were found in the North Carolina foothills, in Hiddenite, Alexander County. Any ideas on what they might be?
Rocks and minerals are classified on much more than just their appearance. You should do further testing to find more about it’s composition. However, given the history of where you got it and from what I understand you to be saying about it’s appearance, I would venture a guess that it may be a rock from a banded iron formation. (BIF) Other possiblities are Jasper or an ordinary sandstone
