FishingNosara’s Great 2010 Catches
It’s no wonder that FishingNosara is the gold standard for Costa Rican Fishing. Check out the Fishing Techniques we have perfected at FishingNosara and to enjoy the pictures of all these wonderful catches. Here are the highlights from FishingNosara’s Fishing Report Costa Rica:
January 2010
On January 4th Frederick Leboutiller was aboard for a trip on the Cabo. He didn’t catch any keepers, but he fought a few huge Dorados and had lots of action on smaller fare. The next day client Eduard Campbell got on the same Dorado frenzy, and this client managed to boat three of the big beauties; all weighing over 30lbs. Then it was client John Swolts’ turn on the Cabo. This time Captain Vibert took him to all the good spots and he came back with a little bit of everything: two Dorados (a 20lbs. and 35lbs.), a 15lbs. Yellowfin tuna, and a pair of 12lbs. Black tunas.
January 10th brought Don Dingman, host of TV’s Hook the Future, on board the Wanderer to film an episode. Hook the Future is a show dedicated to teaching youngsters the finer points of fishing, and Don found some lucky kids from the Nosara area to take part. On the Wanderer they caught and released three Sailfish ranging from 80lbs. on up to 110lbs. They also caught five Dorados weighing 40lbs.-60lbs. The next day he fishing along the Nosara river and filmed another episode.
February 2010
Longtime friend and client Scott D’Arrigo joined Craig Sutton and the crew of theWanderer for a very memorable day of fishing on January 30th. With Craig in command of the cockpit and Scotty on the reel they pulled in this massive Sailfish…Craig brought the big fella into the boat himself, a first time for him with a Pacific Sailfish.
Most recently client Michael Weil booked a three hour sunset cruise on theSportsman on February 12th. The bite was very active over the reef and Mr. Weil ended up boating four excellent 12lbs. Black Tunas.
On February 8th client Kristen O’Connell booked a three hours sunset cruise and we are happy to report that she caught five nice-sized Black Tunas. Her party also enjoyed swimming around Playa Rosada. Remember that all FishingNosara boats can be used for snorkeling, surfing, and sightseeing trips as well as fishing. On February 10th Kristen Case caught a 12lbs. White Tuna and a 10lbs. Black Tuna on a sunset cruise.
March 2010
The Nice n’ Tight did track down some Black Tunas for clients Carl and John on March 3rd and 6th respectively. The Bite turned on in a big way on March 7th for client John Mysak. He fished five straight days with Captain Eduardo on the Nice n’ Tight and it seems clear that the fish still don’t know what hit ‘em. The best day was the first with a 100+lbs. Sailfish release, a nice White Tuna and a tasty Yellowfin…and that was before lunch! Once they got out to the deep water in the early afternoon the spread was attacked by a 200+lbs. Blue Marlin! Mr. Mysak fought him all the way, never gave up, and set-up the crew to successfully live release the big blue monster. Perfect teamwork, perfect fish.
Things got off to a fast start on February 20th when client David Yudelson put the local Black marlin population on the run. They had action in the spread all day and lost an angry 500lbs. tail-walking Black Marlin. David and the boys hung tough, and later in the day they caught and released a Black Marlin around 250lbs. He finished his day off with some topwater casting a caught a variety of reef fish. Great day David!
In late-February we welcomed Captain Dan Parker, a legend in the Northeast Florida fishing community as both an angler and as the owner of Pinpoint Marine. He was in Nosara with his wife Charlene for three 3/4 days on the Wanderer and they had a great time. On February 26th Captain Dan caught this sweet Wahoo and fought bitterly with a 400lbs. Marlin, which jumped off the hook about 200 feet off the transom.
April 2010
In late March Captain Eduardo took the Sailfish to school, raising fourteen of them and getting four all the way to the boat for the release. Watch out fish! Eduardo’s in town. April 7th brought a massive catch for client Tom who fished on board the Nice n’ Tight and released a nice Sailfish in the 80lbs. range. Captain Eduardo then hunted the reefs for some Yellowfin tuna, and Tom was burying the hooks and bending rods to the tune of twenty-five fish! Captain Eduardo made certain that Tom had a great day!
Captain Vibert Blanche took the brunt of the slow early March, but he has been picking it up in April and has kept steady with some great nature tours. On March 26th Stephanie Kawalik took a great Nature Tour. They saw more than 20 nice dolphins with different colors. Also, they got some pictures of a baleen (that’s Whale in Gringo) and a couple sea turtles.
On April 7th the Grove party was all over the Dorados and then finished their day off strong with a late-afternoon Black Marlin release. Even though the month started off slowly, great crews like the Wanderer’s have the skills to keep clients on fish and fish on hooks. Now that the Marlin have showed up big time, there in no reason not to expect more awesome trips.
May 2010
Captain Eduardo has been fishing like a madman in the last month, and he has theNice n’ Tight back on top of the leaderboard. He’s had a great mix of sunset cruises, nature tours, and flat-out billfish hunting…the common thread? Lots and lots of smiling clients. On April 19th Captain Eduardo welcomed Jacksonville client Van Evans and his girlfriend for the first of two days fishing. Van owns a great little seafood restaurant in Florida and is no stranger to some great looking fish. Their first sunset cruise netted them a nice macarella and a ponpano. A few days later they had another awesome sunset cruise catching a delightful white tuna and a beautiful amberjack.
That same morning clients Crissy, Rich, and Robert caught five nice white tunas in just a few hours fishing. Captain Eduardo knows how to stay on the fish, evidenced by two trips on the same day catching the same species fish. His experience on these waters give him the competitive edge.
Recently the bite has turned inshore to the reefs, as client Darren can attest from his trip on May 11th. He reeled in a 12lbs. Yellowfin tuna and three equally large black tunas on a half-day trip. On May 13th client Ernest took a three-hour sunset cruise and caught five 12lbs. Black tunas and saw these cool turtles. That sounds like a lot of fun for such a short cruise.
On May 14th Client Mark Padilla from Samarra booked Captain Vibert for a morning trip. The Captain pointed the Cabo towards the offshore reef and begin to tease the bigger fish up from the bottom. First Mate Vibert Jr. and client Mark were jigging the deep water off of the transom, waiting for the first nibble when BOOM!
A big, mean, hard-fightin’ Rooster fish started peeling off line like it was cotton candy and dove straight down. The Captain and crew were patient and let the big fella tire out. They kept up about 3 knots to keep the fish honest and made the slow spiral overhead. The Rooster followed the water column up like a spiral staircase right into the Cabo. Upon release, this Rooster felt to weigh about 45lbs.
June 2010
One of our favorite clients Ivan de Luca and his son Tomas were on the Cabo for several fun filled days, catching nearly one of every species in the ocean. Unfortunately the biggest Marlin they had hooked up broke the leader right at the boat, but that’s how it goes when fighting the mightiest fish in the sea. From the inshore reefs to offshore trolling, Captain Vibert knows how to get the job done.
The 31′ Wanderer has built quite a reputation in the six short month she’s been in service as the dominant billfish hunter in the area. This month Captain William and mates Alex and David had some phenomenal billfish releases and also put clients on a wide variety of other fish. One of my best friends Jacksonville angler Chetri Dimitroff was aboard the Wanderer on May 28th and caught his first ever Pacific Blue Marlin. The fight lasted seventeen minutes and ended with a safe live release. Chetri represents FishingNosara at fishing tournaments around Florida; last year he placed in the Kingbuster 400. This trip, Chetri and his posse had an awesome time and caught nice tattooed sunburns.
Jacksonville angler Frederick Porcase signed up for three days on the Wanderer from June 11th-13th and he had his mind firmly set on catching billfish. The crew was up to the challenge and for three days they chased the biggest, fastest, toughest fish in the ocean with excellent results. Sporting a razor-sharp meter-long spear and a top speed of 68mph, Pacific Marlins can only be safely caught with the right combination of boat, tackle, crew and angler working together seamlessly.
On the first day they live released this 300lbs. Marlin and lost a 350lbs. Blue Marlin very close from the boat. The lines were popping all day though with seven Yellowfin tunas and a 50lbs. Dorado on ice by days’ end. On June 12th Mr. Porcase and his party had another 300lbs. Marlin on the line but he bit off the leader and got away. No worries though, because the day was saved with a pair of great Sailfish releases and six 15lbs. Yellowfin tunas in the fishbox. Their final day on the Wanderer was highlighted by the largest Sailfish release of the month (150+lbs.) and a big 40lbs. Amberjack. Mr. Porcase would go on to have two fantastic days on the Cabo as well and it is safe to say that his five day fishing trek was the most fruitful in recent memory. Great work by the respective crews, Captains, and anglers!
In June 14th Bryan Russo and his party got on three very nice Yellowfin tunas, and were chowing down on fresh sushi when a 120lbs. Sailfish ripped through the spread. A ten minute fight ensued and the crew safely released the monster fish.
