The Downside to Being a Work at Home Mom

Now that you’ve decided to join the leagues of women who have become work at home moms, you’re probably ecstatic about the possibilities that await you and your career.  At this point, you can do practically whatever you choose:  you can finally jumpstart a small business, make money blogging, or telecommute to work instead of leaving the house.  The choice is basically yours, and this kind of freedom is what moms enjoy when they choose to work at home.

Nonetheless, there are a couple of things that work at home moms ought to keep in mind when it comes to managing their tasks.  If you can squeeze past these tight spots brought on by working in your own home, you won’t have a hard time adjusting to your new working environment:

1.    The urge to check on the kids frequently:
When working at home, it’s easy for moms to start fussing over their kids’ every move, even if there’s a lot of work to do.  You’ll have to curb the pressing urge to check on your children every so often, since that can put a real crimp on your productivity and can cause you to get unnecessarily derailed from your tasks.

Try to get some help from a baby sitter or from a relative who’s only too happy to lend a hand, so that you don’t have to fret about how your children are doing while you’re caught up in a task.  Don’t get too absorbed with work, though!  Remember to spend some time with your kids by taking 15-20 minute breaks when your tasks start wearing you out.

2.   Distractions:
In an office where everyone is expected to be on their toes and professionalism is demanded of everyone, there’s hardly any room to slack off or loaf around.  At home, however, doing just that is easy, especially since you don’t have a boss anymore and won’t need to answer to anyone but yourself.  But this is precisely why you should watch out for distractions that can get in the way of your work, since it’s easier to give in to them when you’re working at home and no one’s checking on you.  Remember:  if you let yourself get reeled in by distractions, your work will suffer, and unfortunately, so will your income.

3.  Extra paperwork:
When you start your own business at home or transfer your work to your own house, you might have to handle a lot of the paperwork by yourself at one point or another.  This is especially true if your former company used to take care of your insurance or other such financial obligations.  Keep track of your bills, get a hold of your expenses, and make sure that you pay your all outstanding dues on time.  You don’t want to be bogged down by debt just because working at home has made you more complacent.

4.  Loneliness:
A lot of work at home moms who make money online have to grapple with those days when loneliness or boredom sets in.  This is because most of them came from offices where they had daily contact with people in real time, where talking to someone meant dealing with that person in the flesh, instead of seeing an instant message pop up on the screen.  Unfortunately, working at home won’t afford you that much social interaction, so try to find ways to conquer loneliness when it hits.  Ring up some friends every week and arrange to meet up with them, or take the family out to dinner when you’re done with work.  That way, things don’t get boring or humdrum for you, and you won’t end up resenting your job.

It’s easy to get caught up in the euphoria of finally working at home and seeing your children more often, but you have to remember that working in a domestic setting can also have some drawbacks that you will have to overcome.  Remember: whether you want to make money blogging, are eager to become and entrepreneur and sell products, or just plain telecommuting, working at home can be the most rewarding career move you’ll ever make, but only if you learn to adjust well and manage yourself, your time, and your finances prudently.
