Koi Supplies: The Stuff You Need For A Healthier Koi Pond
The Koi are colorful and magnificent pets that owners can have in their ponds, but keeping them in good health requires the basic knowledge about the fish itself and outdoor ponds, plus a few necessary supplies.
First off, you need to have filtration system that will maintain the water quality of your pond. There are two classes of filters, the mechanical and the biological. The function of the filter is to remove those unwanted pollutants, decreasing the illnesses and diseases that may affect your fish.
Your filtration system will only work in processing the water when the water moves, that's why a pump is needed (another important factor that'll promote your pond's health). Although you can have a waterfall or fountain in the pond to aid water movement, the pump shouldn't be completely replaced by them, as they don't have the necessary strength to help with the pond's filtration.
The good thing about having a fountain is that it'll give you tranquility, which will drown those unwanted noise, stir the water, and provide oxygen to the pond.
Other pond supplies, although they're not needed on a daily basis, should still be kept available when the need for it arises. The dechlorinator is used to replenish the water level of your outdoor pond with tap water (but you need to eliminate and remove the harmful chemicals of the tap water first).
The nitrate and pH levels of the water should be checked weekly with the use of test kits available in local pet stores. Pond salt and baking soda can be added to the water in regulating the nitrate and pH levels of the water when the test will show that the levels of chemicals are off.
The most important supply for your pets is food. Even though they tend to eat a wide variety of natural food, it's still important to keep a basic source of food ready all the time. The fish can eat out of their owner's hand, so various snacks and treats can be offered to your them.
Also, look out for those predators. These are kingfishers, foxes, cats, herons, raccoons and badgers. A good design for a pond can keep them safe. Ponds should be deep enough in order to prevent attacks from herons. You can also make overhangs on the side of your pond to prevent these predators from reaching the pond's water.
Another way to do this is by placing the pond under a tree, to cover the aerial view of the birds. Placing nets over the pond will work two-fold: it serves as a protection from predators and a prevention for debris like leaves from falling into the water.
Keep in mind that your pets require a little bit of effort from your part as you take care of them when setting up your outdoor pond and considering all of the supplies you're going to need for it. But these are truly magnificent creatures that are really worth your effort!
