I guess after raising and selling fish for 50 years or more, you tend to forget things… the Texas cichlid ORIGINATED in the lower Rio Grande drainage in Texas and Northeastern Mexico.
Anyway, you can try checking out the hazard ponds at local golf courses for tilapia. With the weather in Texas, it’s very possible you may find lakes or farm ponds with peacock bass in them. And both tilapia and peacock bass ARE cichlids.
With that big of an aquarium, why not go for a Guadalupe bass, Micropterus treculii? This little species of black bass is only found in Edward’s Plateau in central Texas… not sure how far or what direction is from Dallas. Its main habitats are the San Marcos, Colorado, and Guadalupe rivers. They can also be found in runoff creeks such as Barton Creek, Onion Creek, and The Comal river. This species has also been stocked in the Llano river.
