How to tie my anchor line to the right length?
I have a raft. On the front of it is an anchor ring. To that I have attached my 75′ anchor line then to a 4 foot anchor chain then to my anchor. That setup is for deeper water. But what knot do I use to shorten the line for shallower water? I don’t have a “cleat” on the boat, just an anchor ring. I would assume that entails tying a secondary knot at a shorter distance on the line to the ring on the raft.
i would start by splicing the end of your rope onto the anchor ring so if any of your knots come undone you will not loose your anchor. If you cannot splice tie a bowline (i heard it refered to as a Bowman’s knot the other day on American tv show) and leave enough tail(6 inches or about 150mm) to feed through the main part of your rope. eg after tying the knot open one of the strands of your rope, (before the knot) and feed your tail through it, repeat about 40 mm or 1″ down the rope. This way your knot will never come undone. As for the knot to shorten rope probably a round turn with two half hitches, simple knot that will not pull tight. You should find how to do the knot on the web fairly easily, very common knot for tying boat up.
