Mooncup and other cup products for menstruation?
I am wondering if the mooncup or other cup products for menstruation is actually a good product to buy. I don’t know anyone who has used it, therefore I would like some thoughts from people who have and use the product.
Yes, very good to buy.
I’ve used menstrual cups for over nine years, Mooncup was the first brand I used, I’ve also used MeLuna’s, Divacup, Lunette, Ladycup, Instead softcups and I use my diaphragm as a menstrual cup for sex on my period too. I’d never consider going back to tampons or pads, I also recommend them to all the women I deal with through work because they are a safer and more convenient option.
I have VERY heavy flow, even with the most absorbent tampons and pads on the market I would leak through them and my clothing within 15 minutes on a heavy day, with a cup my flow is reduced slightly and I can go more than twice as long – plus I know when the cup is full so can avoid mess, and can sleep with a cup so no waking up on my period in what looks like the set of a bad slasher film! With tampons and pads I had discomfort from the pads, soreness from inserting tampons and the string cutting through my labia, and I also had chronic yeast and bacterial infections – since using a cup there is no discomfort and I’ve not had one infection.
They are safer and more hygienic because they don’t prevent vaginal cleaning, don’t harbour bacteria, don’t encourage bacterial growth, don’t keep flow in contact with the vagina where it can effect pH, don’t loose fibres, don’t contain harmful ingredients and can be made sterile. So no known risk of TSS, they also don’t cause infections or increase cramps as tampons commonly do and no long-term risks from toxic exposure.
This means they’re more convenient, cups can be worn for up to 12 hours so twice as long as tampons or pads, and unlike tampons cups can be worn safely with any flow even very light flow, overnight and before your period – also no need to carry spares or run to the shop if you run out, and no balancing act in public toilets between wrapping up used tampons/pads and unwrapping new ones. Cups hold more flow and have light suction which also prevents leaking, they’re not only half as likely to leak, but you can feel when they are full and if they do leak it’s only light verses the full flood you get when a tampon leaks.
Other benefits are of course they’re greener by cutting down on a lot of waste and harmful manufacturing, the companies are ethical by caring for women’s health and the environment as well as not using menstrual taboos to sell products, cups can teach you about your body such as cervical position and flow, they are much cheaper than disposables, and more comfortable. It can take a bit of practice at first, but in general they are easier to use than tampons too.
Go over to the Menstrual Cup Support Community – http://www.menstrualcups.org – they have over 6000 members who use cups, being a support community a lot of posts are about problems some women are having, but you also have a lot of information and a good independent source of experience. Also, if you are considering buying a cup I ask you consider using this link – http://www.mooncup.co.uk/wc.php?u=1741 – 20% of the sale supports women’s health projects.

In Time $7.61 As a storyteller, Andrew Niccol tends to think big, tackling heady subjects such as genetic predestination (Gattaca), the nature of reality (The Truman Show), and celebrity in the cyber age (S1m0ne). In Time, Niccol’s first film since 2005′s Lord of War, has a typically gigantic premise–a world where everyone over 25 years old must pay for every continued second of their existence–but stumbles i… |
