How is plastic made strong for planes, etc?
I have heard that airplane/aircraft wings are often made out of plastic.
Not the plastic that we see everyday, but strengthened plastic.
I have to do a PowerPoint on this subject. And I was wondering if anybody knows how researchers and scientists have been able to strengthen plastic.
If I can have information/links I would greatly appreciate it.
Anything that has to do with strengthening plastic and how its done would be great.
Most aircraft wings are made out of metal, however in modern aircraft the use of carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRPs) is quite common. For example, 22% of the weight of the Airbus A380 is made up by CFRPs.
As the following article states, the new Airbus A400M military transport aircraft will have an all-CFRP wingbox. (The wingbox is the primary load-bearing part of the wing).

It also says that CFRPs will make up over 50 % of the structural weight of the the still-to-be-built Airbus A350 and Boeing 787. The wing leading edge and stabilizers will be the only visible metal parts left!
