Choosing A Pet Supply Store
Pet supply store franchises and superstores have seen unprecedented growth since the nineties. In 2005, PetSmart and PetCo opened up 90 additional stores nationwide. Additionally, Pet Supplies Plus adds 10-15 new pet supply store each year. Over the years, smaller stores carrying pet products have been bought out or shut down. In the last five years, pet services like dog obedience school, grooming, boarding and veterinary care have increased. Retail prices increased 16% to accommodate the growth, improve profitability and drive down the cost of other pet products. Another factor driving down pet supply prices is foreign imports for pet toys, collars, leashes and bedding. In the past, many consumers would simply pick up a bag of dog food at their local grocery stores because it was cheaper, but now that prices have come down, while service and selection has gone up, there are more reasons to shop at a specialty retailer.
PetsMart is a top retailing pet supply store, with more than 1,107 outlets in 47 U.S. states and Canada. They also have 132 PetsHotels, or cat and dog boarding facilities. At their Doggie Day Camps, over 378,000 dogs are trained each year. The pet grooming facilities clean up 7.5 million dogs and cats each year, the 1,000 pet hospitals care for 3.5 million pets annually and the pet adoption services help 7,000 pets find new happy homes. As for pet care products, shoppers will peruse 13,000 unique items for birds, cats, dogs, small mammals, horses, reptiles, amphibians, arachnids and fish. Ongoing reward programs and promotions keep the store competitive and their pet supplies online site remains at the top.
PetCo is another popular pet supply store, with nearly 1,000 stores in all 50 U.S. states. As a company that began with just five employees in La Mesa, California, this seller of pet products now employs 22,000 people and is continuously growing. Like PetSmart, PetCo offers services like pet grooming, obedience classes and animal adoption. Some stores offer vaccinations, pet photography, self-service dog washing stations and DNA breed testing. PetCo not only sells a wide variety of natural pet products, but they carry reusable shopping bags in all their stores, transport pets using recycled cardboard pet carriers, make their gift cards out of recycled products and work to conserve fuel efficiency by opening new distribution centers.
Last but certainly not least, Pet Supply Plus, which opened in 1988, offers 230 stores in 22 states. The layout of this pet supply store is very similar to a small grocery store, with wide aisles, ample parking, well-stocked shelves, overhead signs and discount pet supply prices. Compared to PetSmart and PetCo, consumers will find Pet Supplies Plus to be more intimate in size. While it’s less expansive in its services, Pet Supplies Plus is an easy place to find the weekly necessities.
