Can’t figure out how to set a freaking hook!?
When i first started fishing earlier this year, i didn’t know anything about fishing. I would get a fish on my line and just try to yank it out of the water. I catch about 1 out of 15 white perch that i try to pull in. I use a top and bottom rig with a 1 ounce weight with a size 6 hook on both arms and bloodworms as bait. Any tips on how to set a hook on a perch or croaker will help. I don’t think its the hook, i think its a flaw in my technique.
Assuming your rigs are done correctly and your hooks are sharp then yes, it’s your technique.
The hardest thing to learn for me was when to set the hook. You are probably trying to do so too early, when the fish are nibbling but haven’t swallowed your bait yet. Wait a few more seconds before trying to hook him. That should help.
One other thing I will mention is to make sure you don’t have too much slack in your line. It should be pretty taught, so when you jerk the rod it moves the hook almost immediately. If you are fishing and the current drifts your rig and your line goes slack then when you snap the rod all it does is scare the fish away. Make sure you are keeping your line slack-free.
One thing my grandpa always did was use a barbless hook. He said they help keep on the bait, not the fish. He said the barbs can prevent a hook from setting properly, and they can make it hard to take them out for catch and release. I don’t know how much truth there is to that, but that’s what he told me and he was one hell of a fisherman. Consider switching to barbless hooks or filing off the barbs, it might help.
