Costa Rica’s beautiful ecology is thanks to extreme elevation changes from the 12,000 foot peaks in the middle of the country to the low lying coastal regions. On the Pacific side, this elevation change is so drastic that from a single vantage point one can see a 5,000 foot cliff plunging into the sea over a lateral distance of less than half a mile.
This changing elevation combined with other characteristics factors including steady rainy seasons, no cold weather, and fertile black soil and it is no shock that Costa Rica has more than 3,000 different species of trees. In comparison, there are about 750 tree species in all of North America combined. Obviously, Costa Rica is now a fantastic ecotourism destination.
There are a wide variety of fun choices for the ecotourist in Costa Rica. For the mountain enthusiast there are multiple camping, cliff climbing, and zip lining opportunities throughout the country. In addition, there is a system of rivers curving from the peaks to the beaches mean that waterfalls are easy to find in Costa Rica, and the clear blue swimming pools they form are quite a beautiful sight.
