What Breed For A Parrot?
hi i want to get a parrot EXCEPT A COCKATIEL, COCKATOOS PARAKEETS AND FINCHES. I will pay $1000 not including the cage. I want something that will truly be a great friend and a new family member.
I highly recommend finding a local parrot rescue org or adoption center. There are lots of birds out there in need of homes that make perfect companions. This way you can visit a couple of birds and decide which one is a better match for your personality. Sometimes it’s best to let the bird choose you.
Remember, the bigger the bird, the more complex it is to care for, for the most part. I started out with conures, now I have a mini macaw, amazon, three conures and two lovebirds. Just make sure you know what you’re getting into as they are FAR more complex to care for then a dog, cat and in some ways are just like children. They are messy, loud, and can live anywhere from 20 – 100 years depending on the species. They are very intelligent so you have to keep them busy with speicies appropriate toys and give them lots of DAILY one and one attention, or you could be dealing with some behavior issues down the road. They also require a specialized diet that your run of the mill chain pet stores cannot provide (they often have bird food, but not very good food… roudybush, harrisons and zupreem natural are all very good pellets… seeds should be given in moderation only, they’re very fattening and low in nutritional value). They also need fresh fruits and veggies as well. There are many things, commonly found in the home that are toxic to birds and will kill them in minutes (overheated teflon coating, air fresheners, scented candles, incense, windex fumes, avacado, chocolate, rubarb… the list goes on). AND (LOL) there are woods and metals that are toxic to them too. All of this doesn’t even account for hard they are to determine if they are ill. They often hide their illnesses so by the time you are sure they are ill, it’s often too late.
Don’t pick a bird just for it’s potential for talking or it’s colors as sometimes certain birds that are known to be great talkers, never utter a word. This is another reason why it’s a good idea to adopt a bird.
EDIT NOTE: African Greys are wonderful birds, but are often not great to start out with. They tend to develop behavioral issues if not properly stimulated or fed well and they are more often than not a one person bird. They also give off powdery down which some people are allergic too, as do cockatiels and cockatoos.
Best of luck to you!
