How can I tell if my dwarf hamster is pregnant? If she is, what type of nesting material should I give her?
I got a dwarf hamster from the store and I have noticed that she has been growing rapidly and frantially making nests. Does this mean she is pregnant? If so, how long should she be kept with her babies after the delivery? Thank you very much!
Most likely she is pregenant if she is making nests and getting larger, the gestation period for dwarf hamsters is 18-21 days so if she passes that period then she is not pregenant. Once she has the babies do NOT touch them for the first week, dont clean the cage, move back the beddding or anything except feed and water them, dwarves get very stressed and are VERY prone to eating their babies especially the first litter, After the first week start handeling them a little everyday as long as the mother and babies arent stressing out to bad, the babies should be kept with the mother for four weeks then seperated immediatly at four weeks the male babies can get the sisters and the mother preg. again. Which is unhealthy for the mother to have back to back pregnancies and for the sisters to have babies so young. Good luck
