My bird is obsessed with a mirror he found?
I have an eclectus parrot (a male) who was wandering in my bedroom a little while ago when he found a mirror. I have never allowed him mirrors before to prevent attachment, but he discovered a “friend” in the mirror and will not leave the mirror alone now. If I take him away from the mirror, he immediately tries to go back, and if I shut my bedroom door he could sit there and knock on the wood for hours. My bird is too attached to his new friend! How can I break my bird’s bad habit?
You should cover the mirror or hide it when he comes into your room. Offer him his favorite toys and play with him when he is in your room. You can buy him a new toy that will take him a week or so to figure out. A good toy would be one that a treat can be placed into or some hard shelled nuts that are recommended for parrots and the bird has to figure out how to get the treats out of. Try teaching him a new tricks.
When parrots feel they are not getting enough attention they will look for something to do just like a small child and its these times they can get into trouble or start getting mean out of frustration. Make sure you have a special time to play each day this will give the bird something to look forward to each day and teach the bird to have patience when you have other things to do. Make sure you tell your bird when you can play and when it has to wait. Reward good behavior and ignore bad behavior.Offer him people food that is good for him that you have taken off your plate in front of him. This will strengthen the bond between you and the bird. This food offering will show the bird that you are bonded to it as if you are its mate and it won’t be long before the bird forgets about the mirror.
