What does cage size matter for parrots?
Once upon a time I had a cockatiel, but now I am considering a lovebird. Would it be ok to keep a lovebird in a larger cage? What happens if you keep any kind of parrot in a larger size cage?
As has been said, a Lovebird will be fine in a cage made for Cockatiels. But you should not try to put a larger parrot into a Cockateil cage. There is a good reason for this– BEAKS!!
A large Parrot could shear through the skinny bars of a Cockateil cage like they were string cheese! My Quaker Parrot, who is about twice the weight of a Cockatiel and only considered a Medium sized parrot, bit completely through a stainless steel water bowl! 3 times!!
Bars in a large Parrot’s cage will be very thick. I have seen some with one quarter inch steel rods for bars!
Likewise do NOT put a small bird like a Lovie or Cockateil in a cage made for a large bird. The smaller bird might actually be able to squeeze through the bars and escape. But an even worse scenario is that I have known some people who did this, and the tiny bird stuck his head through the bars then got panicked and started to thrash wildly. The poor thing broke his neck!
Cages are made for a specific size of bird, and that is what you should use. To do anything else is dangerous!
