4 Things That You Have To Do After Buying A Rabbit Hutch

After much consideration, you finally decided to buy your rabbit its own home – a rabbit hutch. Given the fact that you spent a lot of your time choosing, you are quite sure that you got yourself the perfect unit. So now you can relax, and let your pet enjoy his new home.

But hang on, relaxing is the last thing that you should do after buying a hutch. For the enclosure to do whatever it is that it is meant to do, you would have to do several things first. So what are those things you ask?

Well here are some of them to give you an idea.

1.    Look for a perfect spot for your rabbit hutches.

As much as possible, try not to put it on a place where it gets direct sunlight. This is because the hot afternoon sun might be too much for your pet. So it is always ideal to find a spot that gets sun during mornings and shade in the afternoons.

2.    Weather proof your hutch

Yes, the papers that came with your hutch may say that the unit is already weatherproofed but hey, you can never be too sure right? So to be safe, you may have to do some alterations to make sure that the structure lasts long. A few of these alterations may include: having to build your hutch a second slanted roof (if necessary) to make sure that no moisture gets to remain on top of the structure; and during the times when you are expecting a lot of rain, you may want to get a thick piece of plastic and use that to protect both the structure and your rabbit from water.

3.    Spend time to clean your rabbit hutch at least once a week.

Doing this is important not only for your pet but for you as well. See, the smell of house rabbits’ urine and feces tend to be too smelly. So you would not really want them to stay where they are for a long time. Otherwise, you will end up with a backyard with some serious stink.

But don’t you worry because cleaning a hutch is actually easy. You would just have to take out the poop catcher, remove the newspaper bits on the flooring and hose down the entire thing. Just don’t forget to take your rabbit out before doing this okay?

4.    Finally, check on the hutch regularly and maintain it as necessary

Given that hutches are mostly made of wood that makes them susceptible to quick deterioration. As such, it will be necessary for you to perform routine checks every now and then. During those checks, watch out for rotting and cracked wood. If you see them, replace them as necessary. If the hutch also has metal fittings, keep an eye on them to ensure that they do not accumulate rust.

And those are the things that you have to do after you get a hutch. Yes, it seems like they are a handful but hey, these are responsibilities that you have to do as a rabbit owner.
