Why rainwater does not pass through open house chimneys/fireplace?
I bought an oldish house with a chimney/fireplace in the center. I just discovered when I went up on the roof that the chimney is open all the way down to our living room and when it’s raining it does not pour down inside. How can it be?
Before we put a chimney cap on our chimney, rainwater did come directly down. It could be that the rain is hitting the internal damper of the chimney and there hasn’t been enough rain yet for you to notice it coming through. The real danger is from squirrels, birds and other animals either deliberately or accidentally falling down into the chimney. A chimney cap is a very good idea.
