My Favorite Harry Potter Costumes
Who hasn’t been spell-bound by the tales of Harry Potter and his life at Hogwarts School? The first novel was published in 1997 and Harry Potter’s popularity with children and adults has been increasing ever since. Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone and the subsequent six books and associated movies have given us a world full of astounding characters, a magical world of witchcraft and wizardry, plus a whole new game – quidditch.
The whole theme of Harry Potter and Hogwarts is ideally suited to Halloween. It provides us with many outfits to choose from. I’m going to give you a list of what I think are the five best Harry Potter Costumes available to cast spells over others or scare them this Halloween.
1. Dementors. Dementors are really scary creatures, foul soul-sucking guardians of the wizard prison of Azkaban. If you like the idea of really terrifying people as you trick or treat, this is the costume for you. These creatures have a human shape, are at least ten feet tall and wear dark, hooded cloaks that reveal their horrible grey and decayed hands. They look very gruesome with holes where their mouths should be and no eyes. They are similar to vampires but in this case feed off people’s emotions rather than their blood. They suck out the soul of a person. These are nasty and frightening creatures so are great to dress up for Halloween.
2. Voldemort. Lord Voldemort is the most evil and feared wizard and the arch-enemy of Harry Potter. He is totally lacking in human feelings. Unlike most human beings he doesn’t want love or friendship. His desire to secure immense power and immortality makes his extremely powerful and ruthless. Once upon a time Voldemort was described as very handsome but he was transformed into a monster. He is tall and thin, with no hair, yellow teeth, red eyes, long and blue finger nails, no nose and a snake-like slit for nostrils. His attire is a long black robe. He has a wand with a bone handle.
3. Death Eaters. The Death Eaters are a small group of witches and wizards who are followers of Voldemort, committing many evil crimes. They have a dark mark on their left forearms, a sign given to them by Voldemort and by which they recognize each other. Their attire is black robes with hoods and masks. In the movie Goblet of Fire they wore skull masks and pointed hats. However, in the Order of the Phoenix movie they wore metal masks and purple robes.
4. The Gryffindor Robe. If you fancy joining Harry, Ron and Hermione in Gryffindor House then you have to wear the long black robe with attached hood and burgundy lining. On the front of the robe is the Gryffindor Crest which is a lion in scarlet and gold. The lion symbolizes courage, bravery, daring and chivalry, the qualities endorsed by the house of Gryffindor.
5. Harry Potter’s Quiddich Robe. This is the robe worn by the players of Quidditch, a fictional sport created by J K Rowling. Quidditch is very dangerous but a very fast and thrilling game. The wizards are in two teams and fly on broomsticks. The goal is to score points by throwing the Quaffle (a ball) through the hoops and to try to capture the golden snitch. The Quidditch costume is a great crimson ankle length robe with yellow lining.
