What to know about the African Grey Parrot
The most gorgeous and attractive looking and easiest to care for is the African Grey Parrot. The African Grey Parrot comes from Africa and is especially highly intelligent and is a good talking creature. African Grey’s are capable of developing a large vocabulary and may be able to communicate well with their owners.
The growth of the African Grey parrot will get between 10 to 14 inches in length which would classify him as a medium size bird. This breed has only two types in there breed. The Congo African Grey is light-colored grey and has a red tail. The body of this variety is a darker charcoal grey with maroon tail feathers this would be the Timneh African Grey. As a rule the female is smaller than the male. 12 to 14 inches is a normal height for the male parrot. The female African Grey parrot has a more of narrower head and a more slender neck than its male counterpart but there appearance is basically the same.
This is not your average pet the African Grey parrot will live for an extremely long time and needs his owner to take part in his life. African Grey parrot has a long lifespan and can live up to 60 years. Some experience is needed to own one of these pet parrots for their benefit because of their high intelligence. If you want a good bird this may be the one for you. It will need a lot of attention because they will get bored tremendously easy; my friend’s bird likes the TV. If you don’t take time with them, they will get bored and if you let it go to long you will have behavioral problems or worse they will start picking on themselves like feather picking. Behavioral problems will accrue because they are sensitive and like attention. It’s possible that even a small change in their everyday routine or in their surroundings can lead an African Grey parrot to become testy or show signs of self mutilation. Although they are regularly well behaved and a great pet these birds do not come without a few challenges. If your bird is out of control they will give you lot of hassle. He is letting you know that he needs something from you. If you have them out of there cage they like to chew wires or other things, they will bite things because they use their beaks like hands to pull themselves up. They pick up behaviors extremely quickly so if you inadvertently reinforce bad habits in your African Grey parrot, you can also easily teach them good ones.
This bird is a really social bird and the African Grey parrot will be a friend for life. In Africa they commonly flock together and now you and your family will be part of the flock like I said they will want to be with you, having one of these birds is like adding a new member to the family. An African Grey parrot will adopt this new family into their flock. They have been known to cuddle with their owners. They also enjoy their head scratched and some petting like any animal you just have to find out what they like. Time and training will lead to a great intelligent and happy affectionate parrot. Regurgitation for an African Grey parrot is a sign of deep affection. They will also try to “kiss” their owners on the mouth. There is too many germs and bacteria in our mouths and could hurt your bird and make them extremely sick or worse. Plucking their feathers or nipping is a sign of boredom, take action and correct the problem before it gets out of hand. African Grey Parrot may not make a good pet if you have young children or even to old of a person because of their lifespan. Young children should be watched tremendously careful around the parrot they will not take abuse of pull on them or other thing children do to animal when they are young and don’t know what they are doing. Training an African Grey parrot not to bite should be done when they are a baby as soon as possible because when they are older they have a strong hard beak. These birds also use their beaks almost as another hand; Train them in the very beginning of their life and spent as much time as you can so they will be healthy happy birds for you and your family.
The personality of your parrot will be close to yours because they have some human like qualities so the time you spend with them will all pay off in the end. My final thought is if you train your African Grey parrot right keep him happy he will be a healthy companion for a long time.
