Grey Amazon

Grey Amazon
Does an amazon or an african grey make the best pet?

I have almost talked my husband into getting a parrot – nearly there. I just cant decide what to go for. The biggest reason my husband is having to have a good think about it is the level of noise they make, I think that Greys are the least noisy, can anyone verify this? Also just looking for anyones opinion on either bird, I think the amazon would be a double yellow headed, a mealy or an orange wing.
Ha ha! I dont really know anyone with any large birds to ask any of these questions, I am just going by things I read online. We know its going to be loud – thats why my husband is taking his time to decide, we wouldnt take one on without being totally comitted, thanks for the link – we have been looking at birdline parrot rescue and would prefer to adopt one rather than get a baby.

Whether an amazon or grey makes a better pet for you depends on what you’re looking for, and on the individual bird involved. In general, amazons are more rambunctious than greys, which are more intellectual; neither is generally quiet. There are exceptions, but that’s the general rule.

It’s hard to find a large but quiet parrot. Greys can be as loud as amazons, but may not do so as often. It largely depends on the individual bird. We rescue amazons, and find some to be much louder than others.

If noise is a major consideration, you might look at an eclectus. Their size and talking ability is similar to a grey or amazon, but they’re less often loud. see http://www.landofvos.com/articles/misconceptions.html

Pionus are also fair-sized parrots, and quite quiet. They’re also less playful and not inclined to talk or cuddle, but I don’t know if those are important to you. see http://www.avianweb.com/pionus.htm

If you’re willing to go to a somewhat smaller parrot, I’d recommend one of the poicephalus parrots. They’re relatively quiet, playful, cuddly, and many talk fairly well. see http://proaviculture.com/poicephalus.htm

If you’re interested in still smaller parrots, it’s easier to find quiet ones, such as the lineolated parakeet, parrotlet, or Bourke’s. see:
