How do you clip canary claws?
My yellow canary claws are so long I’m worried. It just looks unusual to me. My mother suggested I buy gravel sand paper so he could sharpen his claws and beak. Is that true?
You can invest in a simple sandpaper tube that is slipped over the perch to control the nails once they are a reasonable length, however, you need to get them to a reasonable length first. If you do use them, use only 3 total inches of perch covered with the sandpaper. Despite what purists might say, sandpaper and sandpaper perches are not inhumane, unless used incorrectly.
To clip the nails simply steady the bird in your cupped hand and one by one, snip a bit off the end of each nail. Don’t try to get them short, just shorter.
Canaries are gentle animals and easily scared, but I have never injured or made made one very frightened with this simple act of husbandry. I also have never heard of one dying from blood loss from one nail getting clipped close.
Avoid chasing about the cage. Let it rest in your hand between being caught and being clipped. Let back into the cage immediately afterward for rest.
