Flight Breeding

Flight Breeding
how long does it take for a budgies flight feathers to grow back after they have been cut?

i breed budgies and ive decided to keep this chick as a pet. so ive hand tamed it but when i let it out the cage it always fly away from me. so today ive clipped its wings, but on the last budgie i did this on died about 6 months later. i think it got stressed out and died. because it couldn’t fly i think so i don’t want the same to happen to this one so how long does it take? and how can i stop it getting stressed or board?

They usually grow back after your budgies next molt. When they molt depends on the bird, but usually it’s twice a year. I too have had a bird to die of flight stress, but this is actually very rare ( and usually the bird dies before six months ). I clip all of my bird’s wings, and that doesn’t stop them from living a happy life. In fact, they can still fly quite a distance. I have always believed you should clip a bird’s wings, but not so much that they can’t fly at all. Having all of the bird’s capability of flying taken away ( what happened to the bird I had that died ) makes them feel vulnerable and insecure, which leads to extreme stress. So, go ahead and clip its wings, at least until it’s tame enough to not fly away from you unless allowed. However, remember to not clip its wings too short, or it can’t fly at all, which leads to stress.

To keep it from getting bored, by quite a good bit of toys, and switch them out every other week. Also, devote a lot of one-on-one time to your bird.

Breeding Cattle: Domestication & Genetics

Cattle were among the earliest animals domesticated by humans due to their lack of flight response and to their herding behavior. Their ruminant stomach biology, which allowed them to eat almost anything and convert it into the food, milk, clothing, and fertilizer that humans need, also made them essential to the rise of civilization. But something strange happened to the human-cattle relationship…
