Eggs Chickens

Chicken Coops for urban and Suburban areas

Before you start shopping for your new baby chicks you need to check your local zoning laws. Most neighbourhoods allow chickens but there may be limits to the number of birds you’re allowed and there may well be a ban on those noisy roosters.

These laws must be followed, some online hatcheries have minimum orders which can be tempting but you must stick to the local limit, try finding someone else who would share the chicks, or try shopping elsewhere such as your local feed store where you can sometimes buy chicks.

Your neighbours will be able to put up with the banging of your hammer when your building chicken coops in your backyard but I doubt they would be happy with the noise of a rooster cock-a-dock-a-doodling at 5a.m every morning, Even in areas where it is legal to keep a rooster you must still consider how it will affect you neighbours.

Building chicken coops and keeping chickens without a rooster will still give you daily eggs, chickens will just lay infertile eggs, which for consumption purposes are no different to fertile eggs.

When building chicken coops in urban backyards you need to make sure you are allowing enough space for your chickens. The best way to work it out is to measure how much space you are willing to allocate to the birds and then divide the area of the coop in square feet by four, if the chickens will be allowed outside the coops for exercise, or ten if they will never leave their coop.

Chickens will be happier with more space and odour will reduce as you increase the space they have. Think about how many chickens you actually need and what space you can give them to make them happy. Chickens are social creatures and are generally happy in numbers above three

It is highly important that you keep on top with the cleaning of your coops, when building chicken coops bear in mind that you are committing yourself to looking after these animals every day, neglecting cleaning of your coops will not make you happy with the neighbours as the smell can become quite strong if you don’t change the litter frequently. Remember the chicken waste can be turned into nutritious fertilizer if you add it to your composter.

Dogs, feral cats, foxes and raccoons are just a few of the predators that can cause problems in urban areas. Your coop needs to be secure enough to keep these out, especially at night. You may have the birds cooped in around the sides and above but remember that these predators can soon dig under the fences. Dig your fences wire mesh or equivalent about 12” deep.

The last tip to save your popularity in your community is share the wealth! Putting up with the odd cluck here and there is no price for the occasional free fresh eggs!
