Why is my zebra finch hen moving/pecking at her egg?
She has layed 1 egg and it fell out of the nest and had a crack in it. So today she layed another egg and she keeps moving it around the nest. It seems she’s only satisfied when its not visible ( all tissue no other coloured nesting material ) Its very odd, and im afraid she might want to crack the egg. Could it be un fertile? I dont have a proper egg candler so i dont know how im supposed to check if it’s fertile. Maybe i’ve been checking on her too much? or should i be adding mashed up egg once a week to give her+mate calcium?
She is turning the egg which is necessary to have the embryo develop properly. If there is a pair, the egg is likely to be fertile. It is better to let her alone as much as possible. I would just have a cuttle bone in there for her now and once the babies are hatched, give the egg mash for her to feed to the chicks.
