Should I get my parakeet a friend?
My parakeet, Tallulah, is all alone now since her brother and sister died. She seems really lonely now. She just sits on the perch or the swing or eats. I never see her playing with her toys. Should I get her a friend to keep her company? How easy is it to introduce a new bird to her?
Introducing a new bird is always a problem. First, make sure you quarantine your new bird until the vet certifies that it is healthy. You don’t want Tallulah to catch anything from the new bird.
Here is a website that explains the importance of getting a new bird checked out by the vet, and what the vet looks for: http://www.birdsnways.com/wisdom/ww13eiii.htm
After the vet says the bird is healthy, place it in a cage near, but not touching, Tallulah’s cage. You want them to be able to see each other, but not reach through the bars of the cage and bite each other. Give them about a week like this before their first face-to-face introduction.
Since you have had Tallulah for a long time, she thinks of the cage as “her’s” and may not like an “intruder” so you might want to introduce the birds for the first time outside of the cage, or in the new bird’s cage, to avoid territory disputes. If you are going to do it outside the cage, be sure both birds have had their wings clipped. Here’s a great article on the importance of wing clipping: http://www.birdsnways.com/wisdom/ww19eii.htm
Once you see them together, you will have a better idea if they can be put in Tallulah’s cage together, or if they will have to be limited to being together outside the cage.
Best of luck!
