Cockatiels have the intelligence of a 2 year child so as you would a child treat the situation in the same manner. Not following? That’s ok I will explain myself.

When a child does something wrong ” let’s say they bit you for argument sake” what is the first thing you do, yell at them, spank them, send them to the naughty corner? If you answer yes then this is a perfectly normal reaction, don’t feel bad.

My guess is the minute your cockatiel bits you, you scream at him, flick his beat, or bash on the cage? Now without even asking the question, I bet I am right in saying this, why? Because that is what I use to do, and I created a bigger problem then I started out with.

Let’s face  it, what is he going to do, say stop frightening me? No he uses his only defence, his beak.

So let’s take away that fear get your self something like a stick, chop stick perhaps. I use a plastic thing I got from a kids toy, it’s about 20cm long and it works just fine, I can even scratch Boofy’s back with it as my hand is not allowed anywhere near him.

How To Train Your Cockatiel Not Yo Bite – Step 3 Take Action. What you need to do is start putting the stick near your tiel, every time he lounges out at it to bit if his beak touches the stick praise him and give him a treat such as millet on the stick or a sunflower seeds, what ever he like best.

Repeat this exercise over, and over at least 10 minutes for the first day and so on till it happens naturally. Most cockatiels pick this up with in 3 sessions. So keep at it because if you master this you not only stop him from biting you by using the stick instead of your hand, this opens up the gate way for all other cockatiel training such as removing him from the cage,

  • Have him fly to you when you tap the stick
