is it okay to feed a 6-7 week old cockatiel human food like bananas and tomatoes and cucumbers and radish??
First, you have to understand that cockatiels actually do survive in the wild. their parents wean them and then the young birds nibble on things in their native environment and learn what they like to eat.
So if what you are giving the bird a few bites of would be something found in his or her native world and it happens to be “people food” then I am sure it would be fine.
But make sure it is not overly processed, artificial food. What my cockatiel loves is a few kernels of sweet corn, a leaf of spinach, a little bit of green pepper. He doesn’t like banana or strawberries, they apparently feel sticky to his beak, because he makes a big deal out of wiping his beak clean if he tries them.
Cucumbers and radish I might stay away from because they cause some creatures to burp, and I’m not sure how native these foods are in a tiel’s native environment. Stay away from cabbages and members of the cabbage family too as they have some trick compounds that other species can’t handle.
Just think rain-forest, southern hemisphere types of foods, natural nuts grains and veggies and never too much, just a nibble or two. And yes ask your vet! It never hurts to get a professional opinion.
But my tiel if 17 years old and he’s doing just fine!
