What are some classic chess books essential for any chess library?
Basically anything famous that is a must read for advanced players
I’m not an expert on chess books, but lately I’ve been looking to get a few and I’ve run across some titles I thought I might drop in here.
As far as game collections go, you can’t go wrong with a world championship match collection or a collection of games from a super strong tournament/player. In this category I’d list a few
▪ Zurich International Chess Tournament 1953 by David Bronstein is certainly a classic, and a ridiculously strong tournament.
▪ Tal-Botvinnik, 1960 by Mikhail Tal is a great championship match book as Tal was also a writer, also a classic
▪ My 60 Memorable Games by Bobby Fischer is highly regarded, not sure if it’s old enough to be called a classic.
▪ Instructive Modern Chess Masterpieces by Igor Stohl — a great book I’ll list as a modern alternative.
In the category of strategy and middle game I’d list:
▪ My System by Aron Nimzowitsch — A classic if ever there was one.
▪ Chess Praxis, by the same author, a classic.
▪ Art of Attack in Chess by Vladimir Vukovic is a classic
▪ Dvoretsky’s Analytical Manual by Mark Dvoretsky
I would call the last one a modern classic, time will tell one way or the other, certainly a highly regarded author.
Pretty much any Dvoretsky book is very good, and for advanced players.
Finally for the endgame
▪ John Nunn’s endgame books, secrets of [blank] endings are excellent, too new to be classics though.
▪ Fundamental Chess Endings by Karsten Muller and Frank Lamprecht, again too new to be a classic really.
▪ Dvoretsky’s Endgame Manual — I’d call it a modern classic.
I guess I don’t know any “classic” endgame books for advanced players, these would do well in any chess library though.
I’m sure other people can list more, these are just some good books I’ve come across. Hope that helps.
