Many Kinds Of Finches

Finches have been bred for centuries. Some kinds of finches are bred only for pets, while others had different uses.

There are over two dozen kinds of finches being bred domestically in the United States. Most of them bred in the states come from either the Ploceidae, Fringillidae, or Estrildidae families. These families include waxbills, weavers, canaries, and mannikins. Passeridae is a fourth family that is being recognized by some scientists.

The fringillidae family has the largest variety of finches. With 207 different species, this group includes one of the most well-known and beloved breeds – canaries. Canaries have been part of human society for centuries as everything from warning systems to fashion statements.

Canaries have been bred domestically for more than 300 years. They are now available in a large variety of colors. Originally found on the Canary Islands, canaries have now become the most well-known of all the breeds. These bright birds are still found wild on the Canary Islands.

Their strong skulls, stout beaks, and large jaw muscles that have developed to crack seeds can identify this family. These kinds of finches can also be identified by their distinct colors. The males are easily recognized because they tend to be much brighter than their female counter-parts.

The ploceidae family is the smallest of the finch families with only 109 different species. These finches are primarily found in Africa with a few found in Europe and Asia. Being sturdy little birds, most of these species are not bred for the pet trade in the states. This family is composed of weavers and whydahs, which are small seed eaters.

Right in the middle there is the estrildidae family, which is composed of 140 species spread out across Africa, the East Indies, Australasia, and southern Asia. Most of the kinds of finches that are found in pet stores today are classified as estrildidaes.

This family is popular as pets because of its petite size. The largest of the estrildidae group only comes in at six inches tall. Wax-bills are the most common estrildidae. With their bright colors, they are easily recognizable as are their nests that come in a large variety of shapes.

The most popular kinds of finches would have to be the zebra finch and the gouldian finch. Both of these finches are members of the estrildidae family and are most commonly found in pet stores across the United States. These finches are native to Australia and typically live in small flocks near water.

To sum it up, many kinds of finches are bred in the United States as pets. People of all ages and backgrounds have learned the joy that can come with having a pair of finches as household pets.

With the proper research, anyone can find a finch that suits their lifestyle. If the proper care is given to these birds, they can live for several years. These wonderful birds can be found through pet stores, animal shelters, and private breeders. No matter where you consider getting your new pet from, make sure you are prepared for the responsibility that comes with these tiny bundles of energy.
