Flight cages for finches – ‘A good Environment for your Birds’
Finches are beautiful, energetic and hardy birds. They are a favourite with beginners and experienced bird enthusiasts alike. From feeding to breeding, to creating a good home for them it is essential you know what to look for.
Flight cages for finches are a great option if you are planning to own more than two finches. These cages have more space than regular cages, which is ideal because finches are made for lots of flight.
Flight cages are designed so they have the ‘freedom to move’ but still within an enclosure; freedom to move is essential to their health.
If a space is too enclosed a finches’ immunity to illness is weaker and they can get ‘atrophied’, meaning an organ or body part diminishes in size and strength due to disease or lack of use. Space will keep the skeleton, muscles and heart strong.
A regular cage will give room for them to hop from perch to perch but not enough to fly as much. Flight cages are designed with enough space horizontally as vertically so these energetic little flyers can go back and forth between perches as well as around the space, this means less stress and more freedom.
Flight cages for finches can be purchased or homemade, the latter is usually the more economical option, not only because of the cost but because you can design them to fit the space but with as much space as you want inside it.
If you are choosing to purchase flight cages for finches they can cost anywhere from $200 to $1000 depending on the number of finches you have, the space you have available and your budget.
It will cost more than a regular cage would but remember the health and happiness of your finches has as much to do with their living environment as their diet and relationship to other finches does.
Flight cages for finches should have direct sunlight, 14 to 16 hours a day during breeding times, but if real sunlight is not available use full spectrum fluorescent lighting and position it on top of the cage.
Most finches are sociable with their own breed but not necessarily with people so put the cage in a quiet place away from too much commotion. Also avoid places where there is indoor heating or cooling vents.
To avoid your finches escaping or getting their heads stuck the bars should be a maximum of 1/4 inch.
Keep the flight path open within the cage by positioning the perches at different spots. You will also give them a sense of security if you place some perches up high.
Putting a few toys in the cage will encourage their playful energetic nature and also give them some variety.
Flight cages for finches are an ideal option if you have more than a pair of these beautiful little birds. It might be a more costly option but worth it in the long run. Flight cages will be good for the strength, health and happiness of your finches.
