Backyard Science Projects
Your backyard is a great place for your child to get outside and play. Physical activities like riding a bike are wonderful, but your child can also use your backyard for science projects. If you are interested in helping them achieve this, you may want to familiarize yourself with some popular backyard activities, especially those that have a focus on nature and science.
Exploring the outdoors is not only a fun activity, but it can also provide a chance to try a science project. Whether you live in a rural, suburban, or even urban area, there are a tremendous number of living things – plants and animals – to be found in your yard and neighborhood. Kids naturally enjoy science and nature, and you can help encourage them. This is especially true for kids in pre-school and elementary school. Since young children will need your assistance, you will want to pick outdoor activities that you also enjoy.
One way for children to learn science is by examining the local plants. You can find many different species of plants in your own backyard – some of them planned, and others unwanted. For the best type of environment, explore areas of your yard that are overgrown or not mowed.
There are many different animal habitats to be found in your yard and your neighborhood. See how many different species you can identify. Be patient and quietly observe them for awhile. Can you discover what they eat? Can you see where they live? Bird watching is a popular hobby, and even amateur bird watchers often contribute to real science projects. If your child really enjoys it, they may ask for a new pet.
You can also find many different kinds of insects in your yard. Children may find observing bugs even more interesting than studying the plants and flowers. It is both fun and educational to study the types of insects that are in your yard.
Encourage your child to study the impact of the weather on the environment for the plants and animals in your yard. Backyard conditions change as the weather changes. Study your backyard after a heavy rain, and have your child look for all the changes they can find. Weather plays a big role in the lives of the plants and animals living in your backyard.
Providing your child with some basic scientific supplies can reinforce their learning experience. Consider purchasing science and nature books, butterfly nets, magnifying glasses, containers or insect cages, and so on. Provide a small cage or jar with air holes in case your child decides to catch some insects. These supplies, along with others, can be purchased from many retail stores, including department stores, home improvement stores, and toy stores. Or search online to find what you need.
To keep your exploration focused on education, science books and nature resource guides may be a nice addition to your child’s science collection. Many books and guides have a specific focus on insects, birds, plants, or flowers. Many of these resources will provide you with information and pictures so that you can identify the specimens you find. For a large selection of science and nature books, you are encouraged to shop online or visit your local book store.
.It may be helpful and fun to document what you see as you explore the plants, animals and insects in your backyard. You can easily do this with a camera or a notebook. Have your child record their exploration and findings by taking pictures. Save the pictures – they could be useful for other projects. Scrapbooks and collages are a great way to turn traditional photographs into something much more.
Whether your child plans on exploring your backyard, or they do so without intending to, it is likely that they will be interested in what they see and learn. Backyard science is just one of the many adventures that you and your child can share outdoors. And it just may be the start of a life-long interest in science.
