Where can I find a rat cage big enough for my rat?
My rat has the small starter cage and he’s growing out of it. He needs a big enough cage so that he can run around and play. I’m looking for something that isn’t going to break my budget, hopefully something with a play structure. Thanks much!
First of all, you need to have two rats. Rats are very social and should never be kept alone. Keeping them alone can lead to all sorts of behavioral and health issues. Also, proper rat cages can be pretty expensive. Rats need 2 cubic feet of space per rat. You really should have gotten a large enough cage to begin with so you wouldn’t have to go looking for a new one as your rat grows. Also, remember with males they can get very territorial so they need more space than females might.

You can also check e-bay or craigslist, but I’ve never had any luck finding good cages there. http://www.MartinsCages.com could also be an option. The cages are pretty affordable, but shelves and levels need to be covered to protect the rats’ feet. If you’re not going to get your rat a companion, even though you really should, The Rat Highrise (H-600HR) would be okay for one rat.
