Most starter cages, and all cages sold in pet stores in general, will be outgrown in a matter of months if your have a Syrian hamster.
I’ve found that home-made “bin” type cages work best for them:
Get one of those plastic storage bins (The larger the base, the better, and not too deep). Cut out the middle of the lid and replace it with mesh for ventilation. (Approx $10-15 depending on size)
Bedding should be very cheap. I got a huge bale of aspen (avoid pine, which can cause breathing problems) for only $17, and it lasted for about a hamster’s life time.
A water bottle should cost about $3-5, and a wheel $15 (do NOT get the wire ones. Get one with a solid treading surface, or a hamster could get its legs caught).
