How to Clean and Maintain Bird Feeder Poles
If you are a dedicated bird watcher, you may have given yourself the responsibility of providing food and water to visiting birds. Even if you do not own a pet bird, such as say, a trained parrot, you still have those regular visitors to depend on you. So, you buy bird supplies, such as crumbs, seeds and other food stuffs for birds, regularly. While you may not have any use for bird cage stands, you did scour around for the best bird baths and bird feeder poles. A feeder and a bath may already have been set up on your garden. However, your responsibility to the birds does not stop at keeping the bird feeder poles stocked. It is also your responsibility to the birds and to yourself to keep those feeders clean and well-maintained.
Cleaning the Feeders
You should regularly clean the feeders. There are different flocks of birds that visit the feeders. Some of those may have diseases that they can pass on to others. The very fact that several birds are feeding from the same small areas should already be a cause for concern.
So, how regularly should you be cleaning your feeders? Well, every time that you check a feeder to see if there is still food, you should also check for cleanliness. Are there seeds stuck in places they should not be? Are there droppings? Is the feeder wet and moldy? Full-scale cleanup and disinfecting may be done four times a year or more, but quick cleanups can be done every time you check the feeders. Remove droppings and stuck seeds. Scrape off dirt and wipe dry the wet areas. When you conduct your full-scale cleanup, you can use a pressure washer, brushes, disinfectants and a dry cloth.
By your regular cleaning and scheduled full-scale disinfecting of bird feeder poles, you are maintaining not just the health of the birds, but also yours. You are also maintaining the condition of those feeders so that they will last and serve food to birds for more years to come.
