Budgies Canaries

How can I go about a bird boarding service?

I want a bird boarding services to go with my rabbit boarding service. If I get one split aviary, I will put males in one side and females in the other. They will only be small birds such as budgies, canary’s, finches, Cockateils ect. Can a bird go in an aviary as another owners bird?. Like I said above, males and females will be split up.
thanks, very helpful

Hi
I have parrots and small birds of my own, have bird sat in my own home, am a member and on the board of a respected parrot club.
You really need to do a lot of research before you start this . I would suggest you speak to an avian vet, several breeders and visit some existing avian boarding businesses before you start. When ever you bring a new bird into a mixed household it is recommended you have a 45-60 day isolation period to observe a bird for disease or illness. By putting boarder birds into mixed flights rather than separate cages in isolated rooms you are exposing all birds to potential sickness and possibly death. Also having males separated from females may only lead to aggravation for both sexes or trigger egg laying, especially in cockatiels or budgies. Birds give of pheromones and you are going to be stimulating both sexes even if they are in the same or separate cages. Do you know how to tell a bird’s sex, it is not always easy unless a blood test is done, most birds are not dimorphic? Are you aware of all the diseases birds carry and their symptoms, do you know the zoonic ones too? Will you ask that the birds have a recent health certificate? Do you realize you cannot always safely add another bird to a mixed flight,it may be attacked and killed? I could go on and on asking you questions. Perhaps you could attend a bird club and listen to what potential customers would want in a boarding situation. Birds are not like rabbits, cats or dogs. Please do your research learn about the species and all their needs first before you start. You cannot get all the info you need in a few lines.
