How do I stop my baby bird from biting?
My 1 month old lovebird that I am hand rearing is very outgoing. He loves to explore and perch on my shoulder. But he bites. Sometimes he bites for balance. But sometimes he bites my fingers, and when he perches on my shoulder he bites my lower lip,pecks at my nose and ears. How can I stop him from exploring in this way? And plus his nails are sharp when he walks around my arm how can I trim them without using clippers? I love him very much he is so sweet but I wish this problem would go away.
It’s in the early stages of having a bird that you want to teach it NOT to bite. In order to do this, you have to train it that its bite does not do anything to you.
This means to never react to being bit. Don’t yell, scream, make loud noises or pull away. All these things are either exciting to your bird, or what he wants the end result to be. If he learns that biting doesn’t get him what he wants, he will stop doing it.
I’ve known some people who say to make it an uncomfortable experience for the bird if they won’t give up on biting away. Usually these people hold the bird’s beak before it can clamp down on your skin to show it that you’re stronger and you can stop the bite from happening.
What I’ve found to be easiest in reflecting a bite attack is to give the bird the part of your hand at which they have nothing to grab – in which, nothing to bite. This is the top of your hand but made into a fist it pulls the skin tight. Just make sure your knuckles aren’t showing because those are easy targets! It’s just really important in the bird’s early stages that he learns his bite does nothing to you meaning it will bring no positive results for him.
