Has anyone made birdy bagels (out of heavy cardboard)?
I’m in NZ, and can’t get these imported over, MAF/Biosecurities won’t allow them. I’ve heard different versions of what they are made of, corrugated cardboard, shipping tubes and heavy duty cardboard. Doesn’t all cardboard’s contain glue? How would I know if it is non-toxic glue or not?
Also, vine balls (and assorted shapes look awesome), does anyone know what vine they are made from, either willow, grapevine etc.
Birds love what I call “clean garbage”. Depending on your birds size, a old paper towel roll, toilet paper roll, cracker boxes ect.. will provide hours of healthy playtime. And it costs you nothing because you were throwing it out anyways. I doubt it’s toxic, or our bird would’ve been dead long ago. If you have a small bird like a parakeet, cut the stuff down to a reasonable size. If you really want to make your birds day, wrap non-perishable treats (like a nut or cracker) in newspaper (they use non-toxic ink) or toilet paper and hide them in old toilet paper rolls or old cracker boxes. This will provide your bird with a free foraging opportunity (in nature birds have to forage for their food, hiding treats in toys will encourage this healthy behavior). It will keep them occupied and help with teaching independent play (since the bird will be rewarding “itself” by uncovering a buried treat). You can also use fruit/veggies for foraging toys, so long as your careful to remove them when they expire. String them on a kabob, hook cut bits on a thin shower curtain ring, or weave beans through the cage bars. Depending on your birds size, putting a whole fruit in the cage can provide hours of healthy entertainment (our amazon goes wild when we hang a small apple or a lemon in his cage).
Good luck with your bird, and give him cardboard to chew on, I’ve never heard of a bird that doesn’t enjoy destroying it or has gotten sick from it.
