Is feeding a wild bird unsafe?
We have a few very sweet-natured Mourning Doves that come around every day, foraging in our yard. I enjoy the novelty of having the bird come closer to me as I throw sunflower seeds on the ground. Lately I have fed it by hand, leaving some seeds on my hand and the dove comes up and picks them up. Occasionally it will also just give a little “nip” or a little “beak” onto my hand when it’s empty. I assume this is a signal for more seeds.
In any case, could it be dangerous if this bird were to bite instead of nip? I’m quite aware of how many bacteria and diseases birds can carry, especially wild birds. Should I wear gloves to be safe?
We live in a clean suburban environment with relatively few birds around, it’s not like I’m feeding city pigeons or anything. Any thoughts?
No, it’s not dangerous. If that were the case, then my boss would have to start hiring some new people to work, since every day at lunch three or four of us will be outside, feeding the seagulls by hand. That has to be more unsanitary then what you are doing, and none of them have ever got anything from it. Keep doing it, it’s kind of cool to have wild animals eating out of your hand.
