Is it safe for my rabbits to eat bird seed?
We put bird seed out for the birds but our rabbits have started eating it. Would it harm them?
It’s possible it could. Rabbits have super sensitive digestive systems; it’s probably the trickiest thing about their care. Once the bacterial balance in their gut is disturbed (by overdoing the veggies or feeding seeds, etc.) they can easily get enteritis. That’s a severe inflammation of the digestive system that’s hard to treat and can cause the death of the rabbit really quickly. I might fence off under the bird feeder to keep them out of the bird seed, to be on the safe side. I’d also double check the yard for plants that can kill rabbits if they eat them – like lots of flowers that people commonly plant. There is more care information on my website (link below).
