How do you convince your parents to let you get a bird or ferret? And do they make good pets?Which should I get?
What type of bird Should I get which type of breeds make the best first bird?
Which make better pets birds or ferrets?
I want a bird which will kind of bond with me and that is bigger than a parakeet.
And how do you convince your parents to let you get a bird or ferret? I have wanted a them for a for a long time (and yes I know that I cannot get both because ferrets hunt birds in the wild) and have tried to convince them in allot of ways but none worked. Its not that they think I am not responsible it is that my dad doesn’t like having pets I used to pet sit and had a cat but I just cannot convince my dad my mom is fine with me having a bird but my dad is not .Please help me!And parents why did you let your children have a bird or ferret?Or your parents let you?
Wow, that’s alot of questions. I’ll try to answer them as best as I can…
First off, I’m going to answer your questions backwards. I was and still am an animal lover to the core, and as a kid the first non dog/cat type pet that I had was a cockatiel. The way I got it was pretty funny. When I decide to get into something, I go all out. So when I decided I wanted a bird, I went to the library and checked out every book I could get my hands on. I first researched out what type of brid I wanted, then I went in depth and researched their personality, needs, and the pros and cons of having them. When I had an in-depth knowledge of the bird as an animal and as a pet, I went to my parents and presented my case. (Actually I had presented it many times before, but this time I went fully prepared). I explained everything to them, though I admit that I did quickly pass over the negative things and lingered on the positives. But being honest with them, and presenting “my case” to them in such a way (beign very respectful the whole time) really helped. They thought about it a while, and finally agreed to let me have a bird. I really can’t say for sure that there’s any way to force your parents to comply, because when it comes down to it, it’s their decision, and not everyone’s the same. My parents let me have a bird because they 1). trusted me to be responsible, 2). knew that learning to devote care and attention to a pet would be a beneficial learning experience for me, and 3). they knew that I deeply desired this pet, and that it was something that I would be grateful for and be able to love in a way that you can’t love a toy or game.
As for your other questions …
I would not suggest a ferret, simply because they are very expensive pets due to health issues (that all ferrets experience beacause they are an animal that has still not fully adapted to domestication) and they reek. Flat out. Stink.
So, as for your questions about a bird…
The desires you expressed as to what type of bird you want were kind of vague, but I’ll do my best to help you out.
I would recommend a cockatiel to you. Here are the reasons: 1). they are bigger than parakeets
2). they are a very hardy species and a good first-bird, 3). when given quality care and affection, they can bond deeply with their master, 4). they can be trained to speak and do tricks, which is fun, 5). the average cockatiel is nowhere near as loud as the average parrot, and they are far milder in temperament (they don’t get ticked off and bite you for no reason!)
The larger species of parrots require far more hands on care, are far needier attention wise, and can be difficult when it comes to taming, because they tend to bite (if simply because they don’t understand the strength of their own beak). Larger parrots (including green parrots, conures, and cockatoos) require a bigger cage as well. But don’t think that just because cockatiels are small that they can live happily in a really small cage. if you do have them in a small cage, they’ll need to have daily time out ot fly around.
Also, like I said before, cockatiels are very friendly when you spend lots of time with them. My family ended up with three of them. Chester, my first cockatiel, used to ride around on my shoulder every minute I was in the house. He would say phrases to me, sing to me, preen my hair (and sometimes try to preen my eyelashes, which can be a bit alarming!). He played with me (he even letme put little hats on him and carried little objects around). I kept his wings preened so he wouldn’t get hurt by flying into the windows (something they just never learn not to do) but he would get plenty of exercise flapping his wings when I went up and down the stairs, or jumping from my shoulder and flapping madly in an attempt to fly, or by constantly climbing up and down my shirt, and climbing around anything else I set him on.
He loved to sip water from my cup, and steal cereal from my bowl when I wasn’t looking.
My younger sister owned Rosie, our other cockatiel, and my second cockatiel Tornate, were just as great, though of course I wasn’t as close with them as I was with Chet.
They were alot of work, and I do mean alot. But it was worth it. They contributed alot to our family, and were really great to have around. Nothing makes you feel special like having a bird waiting to greet you when you come home (and they will learn to recognize your voice and call for you when they hear you), or refusing to sit on anyone else’s shoulder.
Good luck getting a bird. If your parents give you the okay, remember to do some research ahead fo time so you can provide your pet with a quality life.
