Natural Wonders And Attractions Of Lanzarote
Lanzarote has earned a reputation as a package holiday destination over the years but increasingly more and more independent travellers are discovering the island. Drawn by wonderful weather, more affordable flights, accommodation and scenery that really is out of this world. There are lots of natural wonders to explore here. Most of which were created by large scale volcanic activity which hit the island in the early 18th century.
Tourists have been flocking to the fourth largest of the Canary Islands ever since the package holiday industry first took off in the 1970´s. And Lanzarote continues to attract millions of visitors today. Many of whom like nothing more than basking in the sun, which shines all year round here. The island however boasts enough stunning sights to lure them away from their Lanzarote villas and apartments behind for at least a days exploring and touring.
Visitors looking to explore the island in greater detail will appreciate the work of Manrique Cesar who sought to create a collection of unique tourist attractions that would provide a worthy alternative to the many golf courses and water theme parks that are so prevalent elsewhere in Spain.For example sites such as the Jameos del Agua, which embodied his desire to fuse art with nature.
Choosing what to do or where to go when you are here can be daunting but your shortlist should include:
Parque Tropical; Parque Tropical is located in the north of the island at the base of Mount Corona, an extinct volcano and the highest point of the island, close to the Famara Cliffs. The views here are simply spectacular. The park has an outstanding variety of birds totalling close to 300 species, including Ostriches, Flamingos, Cranes and Hornbills to name but a few. or maybe Jameos Del Agua: Jameos Del Agua was one of the first in a series of natural architectural art landscaping by the islands famed Cesar Manrique. Manrique took a couple of collapsed caves along with a complete one an transformed them into a natural below ground water garden encompassing restaurant set in the stone surrounding, a lake and even a dance floor. Visitors can also visit the nearby “Cuevas de los Verdes” whilst in the area.
If you don’t fancy any of those perhaps The Cactus Garden. Another fine example of the work of Cesar Manrique. Here he has taken a disused quarry which he used as the foundation for this particular project. The result is spectacular display reminiscent of a roman amphitheatre populated not with crowds of people but with an amazing display cacti (including one very man made one). A gentle wander around the garden is very relaxing and if part of a tour Jameos Del Agua is only down the road to The Green Lagoon is another memorable sight and is just a short drive away from the volcanic region if you are visiting this area. And is located just outside the small fishing village of El Golfo. The scenery here is so stunning that it has been used as a location for a number of well known feature films.
