Are elderberry bushes deer resistant?
I was showing a home the other day that had these beautiful, tall shrubs with cascades of light purple berries in clusters. I am pretty sure that they were elderberry bushes and not American beauty berry. I would like to plant some in my yard for the birds. However, we have an extremely large deer population. (I’ve only ever had lantana, butterfly bush, and nandina/heavenly bamboo survive.) I know that they will probably like the berries, but do they find the actual shrub tasty?

Elderberry bushes are NOT deer resistant according to the Sunset
Western Garden Book. But there is a human warning: “RAW fruit of
red-berried species can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea if
ingested. I don’t know if they find it tasty, but as madmothe… said,
they will eat just about anything if they are hungry enough. Google
“deer resistant plants” and you will find a link for your part of the
