What can I do to my resume to make it visually stand out from the rest?
I like simple resumes that are to the point. Yet, I don’t want mine to just be another black and white piece of paper in the stack. So what can I do? Would it be wrong to Put my name and contact info in a different color? Or to add a single colored line at the top of the page. I just want my resume to stick in the potential employer’s mind. What is on my resume is average, nothing particularly special. I have been a stay at home mom and student the past 2 yrs… I feel a little out of touch with the business world.
If it makes a difference, I am in search of receptionist, personal assistant, admin asst positions.
Thanks!
PAPER:
For printed resumes (does anyone use those any more?). Use high quality, heavy paper. Assuming a hiring manager is thumbing through a stack of cheap printer paper resumes, yours would feel different. He might not even realize why.
NO COLOR:
I wouldn’t go crazy with color, but do use bold and slightly larger print for you name. Also, embolden section headers. Leave line spaces to create contrast, the human eye is drawn to contrast.
ELECTRONIC COPIES:
Have at least 2 electronic copy ready as well. One done with MS Word or the like saved as a .doc, .rtf. Also, create a .txt (plain text) file. You want to use the word formats if possible because you can use bold and different types etc. However, if you have to submit a plain text resume, or paste your info to a website in plain text, you will need to create contrast with CAPS and spacing.
GOOD LUCK
